My inspiration for Maggie Almond and the Scandalous Sister was sparked around seven years ago. However, I’ve been curious about Mary Shelley for much longer than that, ever since reading Frankenstein when I was in high school. The fact that Mary wrote the novel when she was just 18 years old was extraordinary enough, but factor in her torrid romance with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and her volatile relationship with her father, and I knew I needed to explore her life further in the form of a novel. However, I didn’t want it to be a conventional retelling of her life. That’s when the character of Maggie Almond began to take shape in my mind…
